Opium menace to be dealt firmly: DC

TEZU | Feb 12 | Taking cognizance to illegal opium cultivation as a menace to society, a coordination meeting held here today unanimously decided to combat opium cultivation in Lohit district at any cost.

The meeting, chaired DC Karma Leki, was attended by representatives of SP Isaac Pertin, narcotics cell nodal officer Oli Koyu, representatives of Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN), Cultural & Literary Society of Mishmis (CALSOM), All Mishmi Women Welfare Society (AMWWS), All Mishmi Students Union (AMSU), senior BJP leader Sotai Kri and administrative officers, according to an official release.

Opium has been ruining future of future generations, Leki said assured full cooperation for logistics support.  Any deliberate transgression of executive orders issued regularly would be death with severely, he said.

Strongly supporting district administration initiatives, CALSOM, AMWWS and AMSU said that the offenders must be booked under NDPS Act while Kri said it raises the question of alternative livelihood as the public were aware of opium cultivation as illegal. Destruction of few growers’ livelihood was nothing in comparison to the society’s overall wellbeing, he reasoned.

Lamenting that opium intake would spread all over the state if not stopped on time, Kri sought wholehearted support of the NGOs, especially student groups, to anti- opium movement. Destruction and awareness activities He stressed that without local support, he emphatically said.

The women’s group has been constantly involved in spreading awareness against opium cultivation, AMWWS GS Shibali Yun said, adding that they have been regularly conducting destruction operations. She urged the CBN team to continue year-long operations, instead of in particular months.

Assuring full support of students’ group, AMSU president Legem Takaliang urged the DC to take strict action against all offenders as people mostly grow opium for easy money only. He advocated continued eviction and destruction activities.
