SEC assails money & muscle culture, seeks free & fail polls

 

ZIRO, June 15: State Election Commissioner Hage Kojeen during a meeting with Lower Subansiri officers decried money and muscle culture during elections and vouched for a level playing field for free and fair elections to ensure election of deserving candidates.

Reviewing preparedness for holding PRI elections here today, he told DC Chuku Takar, SP Dr. Hemant Tiweri, DPDO Nending Chatung, EROs, AEROs and other officers to ensure fair and free elections to PRIs when conducted. He asked the district administration to take up sensitization programmes on electoral offences under Representation of People Act, 1951, dos and don’ts and model code of conduct. He advocated mass awareness campaign involving all stakeholders including NGOs, students, youths and media.

On law and order, he asked the police to categorise polling stations into hypersensitive, sensitive and normal in advance to streamline security arrangements.

The arrangements discussed included electoral roll revision and updating, maintenance of ballot boxes, categories of polling stations. (DIPRO)
