Unite to curb opium from Mishmi society: Dr Tawsik

TEZU, Oct 04: Welfare Society (MWS) chairman Dr Sopai Tawsik Msihmi on Thursday gave a fervent call to each member of Mishmi society, including student to realize hazard of opium and willingly unite against to root out the menace.

Addressing hundreds of student taking part on Fighting Drug Menace Campaign’ at GHS School here on the second day, he said that there is no time to be a mere spectator but all should unite to discourage opium cultivation and consumption to protect the tribe from being wipe out.

Highlighting on detrimental effect on health of the drug, Mt Abu-based Brahmakumari Iswariya Vishwa Vidhlaya  (BIVV)’s Dr Savita, as a resource person, said it contains high percentage of nicotine that causes cancer.

“Over 10 lakh people die annually by consuming tobacco also containing high nicotine. Tobacco causes various types of cancer, including lung, larynx (voice box), mouth, esophagus, throat, bladder, kidney, liver, stomach, pancreas, colon and rectum, and cervix, besides acute myeloid leukemia etc.

Rajyoga meditation, panacea to get rid of drugs, is offered free in every BIVV centre. Any addict could be rehabilitated if practiced regularly, she said.

Rresource person Pasighat-based Women Against Social Evils (WASE) GS Joya T Moyong, voicing strongly voice against drug addiction by terming it as dreaded killing disease.

“A mother feels how much it pains when her son or daughter gets trapped in vicious cycle of addiction. We need to wake up and understand about the opium and other contraband substance before it is too late”, she cautioned.
Applauding the campaign as need of the hour, DMO Dr S Chai Pul said that H&FW Dept has been always proactive on campaign against drugs and running 10 bedded rehabilitation centre since July 2017 to receive positive outcome. More than 300 addicts have been and rehabilitated till date, she disclosed.

Principal Mijum Lego lauded MWS team for generating awareness as drugs have posed serious threat to younger generation while ASI S Medhi of crime branch highlighted NDPS Acts and other legal aspects on opium consumption and its cultivation.

Similar campaign was conducted at Tamlanagar GSS on Wednesday where hundreds of classes IX and X students actively took part. Headmaster S Upadhya appreciated all campaigners for their proactive approach to eradicate drugs menace.

Meanwhile, the campaign, spearheaded by the MWS in collaboration with BKIVV & All Mishmi Women Welfare Society, is sponsored by state’s sports & youths affairs Dept.
