RONO HILLS, Apr 29: The 2nd edition of THoR Open Badminton Championship-2019, conducted jointly by Boarders of Tirap Halls of Residence (THoR) and Officers’ Club RGU (OCRGU) concluded here on Sunday evening.
Reigning champion pair PG students Tanil Tabang and Charu Toko clinched the men’s doubles title in a thrilling three-setter final match edging past rival pair of Dr David Pertin and Karli Poyom with 21-19, 20-21 & 21-17 scores. Eighteen teams in four pools took part in this category.
In mixed doubles category, 10 teams competed in two pools. Kenli Riram & Guniya Dele pair emerged champions by defeating Modak Kadu & Ashaya Umbrey in the nail biting mixed-doubles final, witnessed by a huge number of spectators including faculty members, officers, research scholars, students and staffs and badminton enthusiasts from nearby area.
Total 46 shuttlers including faculty members, officers, research scholars and PG students took part in the championship, which was inaugurated by former AAPSU vice president Happy Toko on April 25.
The special category awards went to Libi Kayi (best player of the tournament), Samuel C. Ronrang (upcoming player), to Dr. Gibji Nimasow (stylish player). RGU’s junior technical officer and OCRGU convenor Pitam Jomoh and Physics Asst Prof Dr. H. Shanjit Singh gave away the awards during valedictory function on Monday, according to event patron Dr. Pertin & organising Secy Riram.
