NAMSAI, Jan 27: Arunachal Pradesh Football Association (APFA) has recognized contributions of late Indrajit Namchoom Arunachal League 2020 to football for which Indrajit Namchoom Arunachal League is launched here on 71st Republic Day, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein said.
He was addressing the gathering including late Namchoom’s eldest son Dr. Anand Namchoom and with his extended family members at Multipurpose Cultural hall here on Sunday.
Late Indrajit was popularly known as ‘Pathfinder in Sports’, said Mein, who is chief patron for ensuing league, adding it is envisaged to be state’s top football tourney. Its formal kick off of the league is scheduled for February 12next at Chimpu Sangey Lhaden Sports Academy where former teammates & contemporaries of late footballer from Assam will be invited.
Giving a brief history his life, he said that he grew up in Chongkham village, had his primary education before moving to Guwahati for further studies where he got exposed to the football. He went on to play for major clubs in Guwahati, including Guwahati Town Club and subsequently became captain of the Indian Junior team to lead it in Saigon to create a niche for him and NE region in football arena in 50’s and 60’s.
Terming Namsai district as a cradle of many such great footballers, including his elder brother late Sujit Gohain Mein and the district is still home to many budding and talented players waiting for a proper platform.
He urged MoS (Youth Affairs & Sports I/C) Kiren Rijiju to allot one of the 12 sanctioned football stadiums to Namsai to be named after late Indrajit Namchoom. But he exuded confidence that the area can still produce more such sport talents of for national & international levels with such sporting facility.
Dr. Anand said that his was first sports and youth affairs minister of the state. But, he lauded APFA initiative, saying: “well done APFA, thank you”. A short promo for the league was also screened during the ceremony.
Dr. Girish Phukan recalled late Namchoom as a bosom friend and how they had played together. Another teammate Tusen Borah termed him as an institution and credited him for leaning art of football from him and termed him as ae football legend.
APFA aecretary, Kipa Ajay and Namsai District Football Association president Chow Mahajini Choupoo also spoke.
The Champions trophy and official ball for the league wereo launched by DCM, Namsai & Lekang MLAs, APFA members and late Indrajit’s family members.The APFA earlier felicitated late Indrajit’s family members and presented a jersey (No 7) to Dr Anand. This number jersey was used by late Indrajit during Saigon and Malaysia Championships in 1964.
An exhibition match was played between DCM XI including Dr Ananad and APFA XI.
on the occasion were MLAs Chau Zingnu Namchoom (Namsai) & Jummum Ete Deori (Lekang), Former MLAs C.K.Manpoong & Nang Sati Mein, family members & relatives of late Indrajit, DC Bijoy Talukdar, DIG ( East) Take Ringu and SP Ankit Singh, among others, were present.
