SHILLONG, Feb 13: Highlighting the status of tourism in India, World Bank representative advocated to boost tourism in NE India and gave specific inputs to achieve the goal in his address to a consultative meet on tourism, chaired by NEC member Prof. Biman Kr. Dutta here on Thursday.
Urging all stakeholders to work together to develop tourism sector, NEC secretary K. Moses Chalai stressed the need for collective effort to improve connectivity to ensure convenience for the tourists and create the right ambience for growth of tourism. He also highlighted how NEC and the GoI had initiated a slew of measures to enhance image of NE region as a tourism destination to increase number of local and global tourists. The meeting deliberated on potential and various problems, like marketing to help tourism to be a catalyst of economic growth and employment generation.
The need for an exclusive Northeast Tourism Policy and professional training of tourist guides were discussed in the meeting, attended by NEC member air marshal Anjan Kumar Gogoi and major tourism practitioners of the NE.
