Guv: Involve masses in water conservation

ITANAGAR, Jun 27:  Stressing on conserving every drop of water, Governor Brig. (Retd) B.D. Mishra on Saturday exhorted engineers of public health engineering & water supply (PHE&WS) department to explore ways to increase catchment areas and motivate the people for rainwater harvesting.

While reviewing water supply and sanitation status of the state in a meeting at Raj Bhavan here on Saturday, attended by PHE&WS Minister Wangki Lowang and chief engineers, he called for mass involvement in water conservation through innovative methods, while citing example of  Egam Basar to rejuvenate  water sources in Basar forest  area.

While discussing water conservation, rainwater harvesting, potable water supply, sanitation and reuse of treated grey water, he asked the engineers to explore ways to mitigate water shortage during the dry season by installing ground water recharge structures. He advocated use of solar and electric power to reduce energy charges of pump water.

He asked to prepare budget for optimum use of water resources of Raj Bhavan premise to set an example. He also suggested to setting up of grey water management system, reuse of treated grey water for local horticulture and kitchen gardens. Any feasible system should be installed in big buildings like Civil Secretariat, mini secretariats, MLA apartment and housing blocks.

He also asked the CEs to ensure potable water to the people, especially in semi urban areas, where waterborne diseases are common.

Advocating that water conservation should be made daily habit of the people, Minister Lowang called for concerted efforts by all departments.

Earlier, CEs Tagong Ketan(design & planning), Toko Jyot (western zone), Tomo Basar (eastern zone) and  Sentum Yomcha (sanitation) highlighted coverage of towns and villages under various schemes and damages to water supply pipelines due to landslides. (PRO)
