Wild elephant kills youth, search operation launched

NAMSAI, Dec 28: In a tragic mishap, a wild elephant reportedly killed local youth Chau Jenta Mounglang, 20, son of late Chau Chandra Mounglang of Momong village, while he was sleeping in his hut at Kongmukham village behind the Golden Pagoda at 2 AM on of December 25 last.

The elephant came on that ill-fated night and started breaking down the hut. When the victim tried to escape, the elephant caught him and torn his leg and smashed his stomach killing him on the spot and damaged the hut before leaving.

Local forest officials Namsai forest division DFO, Tengapani forest range (TFR) RFO, on receiving the information, including rushed to the spot. An emergency meeting on the issue held on December 27 and decided to launch a massive search operation to locate the wild elephant.  They alerted the villagers, particularly those living near TFR and its adjoining areas, to remain vigilant.
