CBOs raise strong voice against drugs abuse

  • 24 drug cases registered, 41 arrested

NAMSAI, Jun 28: The observation of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ in Town Club here saw keen participation of people from all walks of life, including community based organizations (CBOs), police, Buddhist monks, district officers.

The CBOs strongly voiced against widespread of illegal drugs in the township.

“Mostly youth are affected and all should condemn any addiction and make efforts to make Namsai a drug free society”, Namsai Monastery head monk Agadhamma said.

Expressing serious concern over the drugs, Bhikhu Sangha [resident Dhamma Kitty said that the Buddha Panchsheel prescribes to abstain from killing living beings, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying and intoxication. The Buddhist doctrine is meant to develop mind and character for progress on the path to enlightenment, but those not following it develop misconduct to spoil the society, he said.

Namsai unit IFCSAP president CK Longchot  and Namsai Christian Forum  president Kenli Riba called for strict enforcement of law. While Namsai unit Kisan Morcha president Tewa Manpoong, who was an addict once, said proper rehabilitation of addicts and setting up of permanent rehabilitation centre is the need of the hour.

Brahmakumaris BK Janyanti advised to adopt spirituality and regular Rajoyga meditation, an easy way to get rid of any addiction.

The police department is doing its best to apprehend drugs peddlers, which will not solve the problem unless women, CBOs, students’ unions, political leaders and public collectively fight the menace, DSP K Duggang said and regretted that Namsai police station has so far registered 24 drug cases and arrested 41 people.

Dr CM Thongmong, statistic deputy director CT Manlong suggested to wage war against the drugs, which is slowing killing the Khampti society.

All participants were administered a pledge by ADC S Minin with a promise to shun and discourage any kind of addiction to lead peaceful life.
