ITANAGAR, July 30: Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) cooperators and officers led by Mayor Tame Phassang would be visiting Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) soon to have first-hand knowledge about its functioning and operations.

Phassang accepted the suggestion of a senior journalist as the BMC, set up under Bombay Municipal Corporation Act 1888, is India’s richest municipal corporation with its annual budget exceeding that of many smaller states of the country.

He was given the suggestion as he had led a team to Guwahati recently to study functions of Guwahati Municipal Corporation, which was formed in 1971 under Guwahati Municipal Corporation Act, 1969.

Itanagar Municipal Council (IMC) for Itanagar was set up by the state government in 2014 with hardly any infrastructures. It was upgraded to a corporation under Arunachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 2019.

The elections to panchayat and municipal bodies were conducted on 22.12.20 in which ruling BJP had won 10 corporator seats, Janata Dal (United) nine and NPP one.  The JD-U despite winning second-highest nine seats didn’t field any candidate for both posts. Thus, Phassang (BJP) and Biri Basang (NPP) were unanimously elected as first mayor and deputy mayor respectively.

“The IMC hardly 1 ½ year-old has to adopt various effective methods to generate taxes for its effective functioning to serve the people satisfactorily to meet their rising expectations”, Phassang added.
