ITANAGAR, Nov 23: The capital police arrested one Ratan Nath (65), a native of Dhemaji in Assam, in connection with fraud cases by disguising himself as one Mahesh Sharma, Managing Director of Omega Associates.

Capital SP Jimmy Chiram informed that Nath was absconding for the last eight months after a case was registered against him at Naharlagun police station, for using fake accounts in the name of various farms.

The arrest was made following a complaint received on March 22 this year at Naharlagun police station that one finance company with the name Omega Associates and its Managing Director Mahesh Sharma had cheated multiple people amounting up to lakhs of rupees against loans, financial and technical support to set up small scale factories, the SP informed.

“During the course of investigation it was learned that the accused Mahesh Sharma is a false name and the address given by him for obtaining a bank account and the office was false and was operating another farm by the name Star Marketing Services,” the SP said.

After observing all the procedure and thorough investigation, the capital police sent a decoy customer to the registered office of the said farm (Star Marketing Services) at Guwahati and arrested the accused.

Nath had duped five people of the state and collected an amount of Rs 19 lakh.

The entire case was accomplished by the Naharlagun police team led by SI S S Jha, constables Kanto Samyor and Sanu Raj under the guidance of OC inspector Minli Geyi and the SP himself.

In the meantime, Chiram appealed to the people to remain cautious while giving huge amounts to strangers.
