Taki attends ‘International Year of Millet’ event

RONO HILLS, Jun 02: Agriculture Minister Tage Taki along with Doimukh MLA Tana Hali Tara attended the ‘International Year of Millet 2023’ celebrated in line with the United Nations recognition of 2023 as the year of International Year of Millets to create awareness about health and nutritional benefits of millets at Rono near here on Friday.

The programme was also attended by the farmers, SHGs and agriculturists from the five districts Tawang, West Kameng, East Kameng, Pakke Kessang and Papum Pare.

Addressing the gathering, Taki highlighted the importance of Millet as a climate-resilient crop. He also stressed on the importance of SHG for women’s uplift, and the importance of agriculture for self and community development.

Meanwhile, MLA Tana Hali Tara encouraged the farmers to learn about the technical know-how of millet cultivation from the agriculture department.

Earlier, various departmental resource persons spoke about the importance of millet and the production potential of the drought-tolerant crop. The distribution of millet seeds was done to the farmers from the five districts by the Department of Agriculture.

Later, the technical session was chaired by the Deputy Director of Agriculture, T.D. Neckom. The session consisted of technical training for the farmers on Millet cultivation, disease management and millet food recipes presented by the Subject Matter Specialists (SMS) from KVK, Tadang Meena, SMS, Agronomy, Tilling Tabyo, SMS, Plant Pathology and Nane Taga, SMS, Home Science.
