ITANAGAR, June 29: Indian National Congress (INC) or Congress has begun its ground works to recapture power from ruling Bharatiaya Janata Party (BJP) in Arunachal Pradesh, said Congress working president Bosiram Siram.

Siram, who along with senior leader Tanga Bylaing had accompanied former home minister Kumar Waii to AICC office in New Delhi where he joined Congress and welcomed by AICC general secretary (I/C organization) K C Venugopal to the party fold.

However, later AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge had also welcomed Waii to the party saying “right decision at right time”. Siram told this daily over telephone on Thursday, adding he had discussed about ensuing simultaneous assembly Lok Sabha elections in 2024. Saying that AICC would unfold its strategy when times come, the president advised me to start all possible preparations from grassroots level, Siram recalled.

“It is home coming for me,” Waii told this daily in his reaction on joining Congress.

In fact, Arunachal Pradesh is known for turncoat politics since the state graduated to parliamentary democracy in 1975. How defection brought down Chief Minister Nabm Tuki-led Congress Govt, 43 of the 44 Congress MLAs joined the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA) on 26.10.16 and switched allegiance to the BJP to form Govt followed by former CM Kalikho Pul committing suicide is political history now. But many leaders leave behind their foot prints, like Pul as longest serving finance minister of the country having financial nuances at his finger tips. He was lauded by BJP patriarch-cum-deputy prime minister L K Advani in his public address at Itanagar.

Many Congress leaders, however, have been reportedly projecting Siram, a former minister, as a candidate for Eastern Parliamentary seat. But, Siram refused to comment, saying brining the party back to power is top priority now.

However, former minister Rajesh Tacho also joined the party in APCC office here on Wednesday, Siram said, adding that this is only the beginning in preparations for trial of strength in 2024.

It may be recalled here that Waii had served as home minister in the Pema Khandu Govt while Tacho had also served in the Khandu cabinet earlier.

Waii had represented Bameng assembly constituency in East Kameng district as Congress MLA from 2004 to 2019. However, he lost the 2019 elections as National People’s Party (NPP) candidate.

Tacho had won from Anini constituency for five terms as Congress candidate before joining the BJP in 2014.  He was dropped from Pema Khandu-led BJP government in 2017 and did not contest the 2019 elections.
