National Chess Championship-2023-24 | Popularize chess in Arunachal: Guv

NAHARLAGUN, Oct 30: Governor Lt. General (Retd) K T Parnaik, while addressing valedictory function of National Chess Championship 2023-24, part of 34th Vidya Bharati National Sports Festival, at Abotani Vidya Niketan (AVN), here on Monday, said that chess a mind game is India’s gift to the world citing example of great Indian grandmasters Vishwanathan Anand.

Total 230 Players, including 110 girls of 77 schools from 22 states took part in the trhee-day tournament under the supervision of arbiters from All India Chess Federation. The Vidya Bharati Sports Council of Arunachal Pradesh Vidya Bharati Akhil Bharatiya Shiksha Sansthan organized the event.

He congratulated the participants and the organizers and suggested use of a screen like international events for the spectators ton watch every move and learn.

While highlighting importance of tournaments, chess in particular, he said that playing chess helps in developing problem solving capacities, ability for planning, enhance memory power and management skill, multi-tasking and creative thinking, which are essential in daily life.

Stressing that chess should be promoted in state schools, colleges and universities, he urged the authorities concerned to popularize the game to make the state a powerhouse of games and sports.

Parnaik presented awards to the winners – U-14 Rashtrotthana Vidya Kendra of Bengaluru (boysa) and MP’s Saraswati HSS Vidhya Colony (girls) were winners.

In U-17, Chennai’s GK Shetty Vivekananda Vidyalaya (boys) and Bengaluru’s Jaigopal Garodia Rashtrotthana Vidya Kendra (girls) were winners.

In U-19, Thiruvortriyur’s SRDK Vivekananda Vidyalaya (boys) and Chennai’s Ramkumar Devi Fomra Vivekananda Vidhyalaya (girl) were winners.

The governor with other guests also planted trees in AVN campus.

Highlighting initiative of state Govt in promoting games and sports and youth activities State Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Mama Natung enlisting achievements of sportspersons said that very soon Arunachal Pradesh will be a sporting power house.

Organizing committee chairman Tai Tagak, organizing secretary-cum-Vidya Bharati Purvottar Kshetra Dr. Pawan Tiwari and Khel Sanyojak (game organiser) Saurav Gautam also spoke followed by a cultural presentation. (PRO)
