Khelo India University Games-2023 | Weightlifting event in Arunachal

RONO HILLS, Feb 12: Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU) would host 4th edition of ‘Khelo India University Games 2023’ here during February 19-23 next and athletes from around 200 universities across India are expected to take part in 20 sports disciplines.

The event aims at engaging youth in sports and physical activities from an early age, event chief consultant Dr. Subhash Basumatary, retired Guwahati Sports Authority of India director, said, adding the Union Ministry of Youths Affairs and Sports has entrusted state’s sports & youth affairs  (SYA) department to conduct weightlifting event here.

Of total 20 sports disciplines, 15 would be played in Guwahati and others  in other NE states. Total 4,000 athletes  under 25-year age category from 205 top universities  will be competing for 822 medals (262 gold, 263 silver and 297 bronze), Basumatary said, adding  total 243 participants from 42 universities  will be taking part in weightlifting competition in 10 weight categories for 60 medals.

Headed by Chief Minister Pema Khandu and SYA Mama Natung as organizing chairperson and co-chairperson, a local organizing committee has been formed to organize the event in the state. The executive committee will work closely to ensure efficient execution of the event with responsibility to oversee various aspects of budgeting, logistics and coordination etc.
