AUS observes Earth Day 2024 | Be champions of environmental conservation: VC

NAMSAI, Apr 22: The Centre for Earth Sciences & Himalayan Studies (CESHS) observed Earth Day 2024 themed on “Planet vs Plastic”, sponsored by Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, in the campus of Arunachal University of Studies (AUS) here.

The two-day event witnessed enthusiastic participation of students, faculty and guests with a renewed resolution to combat plastic pollution and safeguard health of the planet.

On the inaugural day, essay and drawing competitions were conducted with participation of over 100 students who showcased their creativity and commitment to environmental advocacy, laying the foundation for their impactful engagement.

The second day commenced with registration of students and faculty members and distribution of T-shirts and caps. A pledge was administered with a resolution to “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle” in daily life of plastic usages.

The day long programme also marked by a mass plantation drive in the university campus followed by a cleanliness drive in district hospital premises.

AUS vice chancellor Prof. D.S. Hernwal, speaking as chief guest, stressd on minimum usages of plastic articles to improve life quality and protect environment. “The next generations would suffer, if we don’y avoid usage of plastic products”, he said adding that minimum utilization of those products would improve life quality of human beings.

Urging the particpants, Prof. Hernwal called upon one and all to become champions for environmental conservation and pledge to mitigate plastic pollutions in all forms.

CESHS director Tana Tage, in his address, exhorted the participants to inculcate good actions to fight against the plastic menance in the society. He said that such events should be observed in daily life to keep clean environment. He informed that the state Govt has adopted several mitigation plans to promote sustainable practices for less environmental impact under Pakke Tiger Reserve 2047 Declaration on Climate Change Resilient and Responsive Arunachal Pradesh.

“As a citizen of Arunachal Pradesh, we rae blessed to reside in a land of unparralled natural beauty, he said, with this previlge comes with huge responsibility on each individual to safeguard and preserve environment for future generation.

Botanical Survey of Inida scientist-D Dr. Krishna Chowlu stressed on action oriented practices to minimize the plastic usage, advocating for the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives such as jute bags and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

The event concluded with the felicitation and distribution of cash prizes to winners of essay and drawing competition according to a CESHS release.
