Tato-II Hydro Electric Project | Payment of land compensation unfair, alleges THEPFCDCF

By Staff Reporter

ITANAGAR, May 21: The Tato-II Hydro Electric Project Fair Compensation Demand Committee Forum (THEPFCDCF) has raised serious concerns over disbursement process of land compensation for 700 MW Tato-II Hydro Electric Project at Tato in Shi-Yomi district.

The committee has accused district administration (land acquisition authority), the agency responsible for the compensation, of lack of transparency and unfair practices in distributing compensation to landowners affected by the above project.

There has been a lack of clear communication from the authority regarding criteria used for determining compensation amounts, claimed the THEPFCDCF, which in a representation submitted to the chief secretary  said that many affected landowners have not been provided with adequate information about how compensation figures were decided which caused  confusion and distrust in the community.

It has also alleged embezzlement of funds allocated for land compensation  by hinting at discrepancies between amounts landowners were supposed to receive as per Land Acquisition Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013 and the actual amounts received.

It also alleged that project implementing agency – North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) – was not invited during the disbursement of compensations.

Demanding immediate action to stop unfair practices, THEPFCDCF chairman Kiran Rinya has sought thorough investigation into alleged embezzlement and unfair disbursement of compensation. However, the committee has also threatened to launch a democratic movement on these issues to ensure justice for all affected landowners.
