Union Home Affairs & Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, BJP national president-cum-Health and Family Welfare Minister J P Nadda along with other dignitaries arrived at Donyi-Polo Airport to attend the swearing in ceremony of the CM and received by a 12-member reception committee headed by state party vice president Tarh Tarak.

Khandu, was elected uncontested from Mukto seat on 30.06.11 after death of his father Dorjee Khandu in Pawan Hans helicopter crash on 30.04.11 while on a visit to his constituency Mukto and served as Tourism, Urban Development and Water Resources in CM Nabam Tuki’s INC Govt.

He was elected Congress Legislature Party leader on 16.07.16 replacing Nabam Tuki and assumed charge as the youngest of CM of the country at the age 36 following a year-long political crisis, but had joined the BJP in December 2016.

Khandu, 45, eldest of three sons of former CM late Dorjee Khandu, is an alumnus of Tawang’s Bomba Govt secondary school (1995), Itanagar’s Donyi-Polo Vidya Bhawan (1997), BA (History Honours) from Hindu College of Delhi University (2000). His academic background significantly influenced his perspective and laid foundation for his subsequent political career as he never looked back.

Khandu, who had also served as APCC secretary (2005) and Tawang DCC president (2010), was re-elected unopposed from Mukto in 2014 and 43 MLAs led by CM Khandu had defected from ruling Congress on 16.09.16 to People’s Party of Arunachal, an ally of BJP. Though there was political move by the PPA, but Khandu proved majority on the floor of the house in December 2016 and 43 legislators, including 33 of PPA joined of the BJP increasing party’s strength to 45 with support of two independents as it had 11 BJP MLAs. He became second BJP CM of the state after 44 days Gegong Apang-led Govt in 2003.

In 2029, Khandu had a landslide victory for BJP by winning 41 of 60 seats and its allies Janata Dal (United) with 7 states and National People’s Party won 4 seats. Khandu took oath as CM on 29.05. 2019.

Known for his dynamism, Khandu in 2018 had initiated “Arunachal Rising Campaign” to highlight key state and central flagship programs at the grassroots level and extensive efforts were made in  remotest corners of each district to raise awareness among the beneficiaries since its inception.

Sarkar Aapke Dwar (Government at Your Doorstep), an  expansive initiative for public outreach and grievance redressal led by DCs in the district level to offer Jan-Sunwai camps in blocks and panchayats on the first day of each month, addressing and resolving people’s grievances on the spot as Seva Apke Dwar.

Khandu visited every district, addressing mass public rallies during the Jan Sampark Yatra when good doer ASHA members, Anganwadi workers and progressive farmers were honoured, while gram preraks (publicity agents) were appointed for each CD block to disseminate information about state and central flagship programs in villages where awareness was lacking.

As part of this comprehensive campaign, teachers from secondary and higher secondary schools were designated as communicators to share information about Govt flagship programs and sensitize school children under “Chief Minister’s Youth Outreach Programme”. These concerted effort aimed to ensure that the benefits of various schemes reached even the most remote areas of the state which had won national awards – “eOffice” project won Gold under Category-IV “Best District level initiative through ICT  in 2018, three awards under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U) – Best for conducting IEC activities, exemplary performance in implementing PMAY-U and Tawang district second best performing Nagar Panchayats among in ‘North Eastern and Hilly States’ in 2022 and 1st  NE state and 10th in India to achieve 100% Har Ghar Jal Scheme in 2024 under Jal Jeevan Mission, launched in 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections to all households which had endeared him to the masses.

Many INC MLAs had joined BJP before the simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha elections held on April 19, which saw the outcome of  Khandu’s various initiatives leading to victory in 46 of total 60 seats by the ruling BJP, including 10 uncontested (CM Khandu from Mukto and Deputy CM Chiowna Mein from Chowkham) and 5 by its alley the NPP besides both Lok Sabha seats.

Commenting on his political graph, an observer said that he is the best rower in the uncertain political spectrum not only by stabilizing the situation but by ensuing lotus to bloom in this hilly state.

Though PM Modi has gone on record saying that Odisha, which saw installation of first BJP Govt headed by CM Mohan Charan Majhi, would be one of the top states in Viksit Bharat Sankalp in 25 years, but the nature’s trove Arunachal Pradesh could achieve it in a decade if Khandu adopts Khul ja sim sim magic through his administrative skills with the “Team Arunachal’.  All should wish him 15th century origin Godspeed to steer the state for a better tomorrow.
