NAHARLAGUN | Oct 29 | ATM theft cases have been rising alarmingly in Itanagar, Naharlagun and Nirjuli posing tough challenges for the Capital Complex Police.
Several instances reported within a week. Papum Pare SP, now Capital Complex in-charge, Tumme Amo said that an ATM theft and vandalism case (No-47/17 u/s-380 IPC r/w Sec 3 of PFPP Act) was registered with Nirjuli PS. The October 26 theft case of SBI ATM, located near old veterinary directorate office at D Sector, was reported on Saturday.
Such incidents have been reported for last one week from Naharlagun & Itanagar and cases have been registered, SDPO Make Bui said. He informed that a new modus operandi was adopted to burgle cash by breaking open the rejected ATM box. The burglars covering their faces to hide their identities enter the ATM booths, disconect link of CCTV cameras installed in ATM booths to leave no proof.
Police have been working to solve the case soon though the stolen amount is small while using CCTV footage, Bui said, adding the thieves are yet to be identified and arrested.
Meanwhile, it has been observed that many ATMs in Capital Complex remain defunct for no cash but when replenished get exhausted within no time due to festive season with chain of festivals after Independence Day. Bank account holders have been facing tough time with no cash in many ATMs during last part of the month, particularly those who get monthly salary.
