ITANAGAR, June 29: Four ITBP personnel were crushed to death while five others injured when a huge boulder rolled down from the hilltop and hit their vehicle along Basar-Akajan road in Lower Siang district on Friday, police said.
The tragic incident took place about 5-km off district HQs before Likabali check gate around 2.30 pm, when the ITBP jawans of 49 Bn were coming from Basar to Sector headquarter at LIkabali.
The boulder rolled down the mountain slope and smashed the mini bus carrying 20 ITBP personnel. A team of ITBP and state police, assisted by locals launched rescue operation immediately to retrieve bodies of the deceased, DIG (Central) John Neihlaia said.
Mortal remains of all four retrieved were kept in the morgue and inquest conducted, Lower Siang SP S. Singpho said, adding the injured five were shifted to nearby Likabali CHC of whom two critically injured were evacuated by helicopter for further treatment.
The toll due to landslips this monsoon rose to nine with this second landslide-related incident in the state within five days.
The vehicle had to slow down because of very bad road condition when it was hit by the boulder, he said, adding rescue operation is difficult in the area due to sudden rolling down stones from the mountain,” he said, adding the identities of the deceased ITBP jawans were yet to be confirmed.
Five labourers were buried alive when a retaining wall of an under-construction RCC building collapsed on a labour barrack at Donyi Colony here on June 24 last.
