TAWANG, Dec 03: “We can bring changes in life of people, farmers in particular by united efforts. DRDO can use their expertise in doubling farmers’ income,” Tawang DC Sang Phuntsok in his address to a seminar-cum-interactive meeting on “Challenges, issues & opportunity in agriculture animal husbandry and environment in Tawang.”
He urged DRDO to suggest better solution for vermicompost and use techniques to find out water quality since the catchment area of the drinking water here are mostly nearby firing range areas. He sought DRDO’s support to farmers in horticulture sector by providing walnut saplings.
Though the district administration is already doing it, but the cost of saplings are very high. On menace of wild boars and monkeys, he requested for some technology, like solar fencing to prevent these wild animals from destroying crops.
Tezpur-based Defence Research Laboratory director Dr.SK Dwivedi said that DRDO is already working with few Tawang farmers on mushroom cultivation, and if required ready to provide spawns of mushroom to them on receipt of demands in advance. The ultra sonic devices can be used to keep away wild animals from fields and this year itself DRDO will do it in some areas on experimental basis. He suggested growing some new crops on experimental basis.
Highlighting DRDO activities, Tawang DRL scientist in-charge Dr.Baikuntha J gogoi said it aimed at making India a prosperous country by setting up world class S&T. The DRDO will soon install a medical oxygen plant at Khirmu Military Hospital.
