PASIGHAT, May 11: Sigar and Raling villages have built a major boulder bund on Friday under Siang Ecosystem Environment Protection and Nurture Group (SEEANG) to protect their villages from flood fury.
They followed the example of downward villages Borguli, Seram and Kongkul and used boulders/stones to erect the bund at vital location north-west of Sigar village from where Siang River turns toward left bank side causing massive erosion in downstream villages of Borguli, New Borguli, Seram, Kongkul, Namsing, Gadum and Mer under Mebo sub-division of East Siang district.
It may be recalled that thousands hectares of land in Mebo sub-division were washed away by massive flood in Siang River caused by high tides last year. Many Seram villagers had to dismantle their houses, including village’s old community hall and shifted to safer locations.
Sigar and Raling GBs supervising and monitoring the works said that such imitative was need of the hour to protect the villages and agricultural lands from cascading effects of Siang River.
SEEANG president Yemling Tayeng and secretary general IAF group captain (Rtd) Mohonto Panging, stressing on importance of such voluntary works without waiting for GoAP assured fund, termed the efforts as people’s movement.
Though Chief Minister Pema Khandu has assured to release Rs. 35 crore for flood control works but could not be released due to model code of conduct. The ongoing works will take around 10 days for such protection works for two villages. Many groups and individuals are extending supports in various forms, Panging added.
