‘Rally & bike messengers mark ‘World No tobacco Day’ observation

TAWANG, May 31: Tawang district tobacco control cell (DTCC) observed ‘World No tobacco Day’, themed ‘Protecting youth from industry manipulation and preventing them from tobacco and nicotine use’ here on Sunday with a difference.

Ten members of Riders Club including Dr Sangey Thinley and Dr D.Magu on their bikes drove in the main through fare of the town from Tawang Monastery to spread mass awareness on ill effects of tobacco and its products. A raly was also organized.

National tobacco control programme district officer Dr. Sangey Thinley later spoke about on ill effects of tobacco consumption and prohibition on spitting in public followed by a group discussion. The DTCC had collaborated with Riders Club for the event.      At Jang, Dr. Rinchen Neema similarly spoke to cops and Govt employees.

At Naharlagun, Arunachal Pradesh state branch of Indian Dental Association (IDA) begun a week-long commemoration of “World No Tobacco Day”, themed “Tobacco Exposed” from Sunday.

“In-clinic anti-tobacco awareness programme would include administering a pledge “I will not let my future generation suffer” by the dentists to all who would visit the clinics besides personal awareness to tobacco users, particularly the youth.  This is a fight against tobacco industry which mainly manipulates the younger generation to use tobacco products to become addicts, IDA state secretary Dr Tage Tamo in a release.


At Lathao PHC, the Day was observed at with theme “Protecting youth from being manipulated by industry and preventing them from using tobacco and nicotine items. This day observed annually for creating mass awareness on harmful effects of all tobacco products including cigarettes smoking. The CHC staff and ASHAs were taught to say “No to tobacco…Let’s quit now,” said PHC in-charge Dr S K Singh.
