ITANAGAR, Nov 24: Few either involved in poppy cultivation or indulged in opium pedaling attempted to fire at allegedly state nodal officer of Narcotics Cell Oli Koyu in state capital around 9 pm reflecting their dare devil act.
Though Koyu escaped unscathed, but such act within state capital reflected the state of affairs which is enough to send an alarm bell ringing for the law enforcing agencies. However, neither the incident could be confirmed nor those possibly involved known due to late evening despite various efforts. Thus, the attention of those who matter were drawn.
As this is not for first time of attempted attack on him though past incident was in other parts of the state, it calls for strengthening prevailing intelligence collection mechanism and intensify patrolling in various vulnerable areas across Capital Complex to nab such hoodlums to prevent such illegal activities.
Thus, the role of drug peddlers could be suspected as it was reported in January last that poppy cultivation had increased manifold in Arunachal Pradesh, prompting the state government to take multi-pronged approaches to tackle the menace, a senior official had said, adding a multi-disciplinary coordination committee headed by present chief secretary was decided to be formed as anti-drug squads up to the village level to destruct rising poppy crops in the state.
Though cultivation, sale and consumption of opium are offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, but over 4,000 acres of poppy crops were destroyed in the state in 2018-19 while the corresponding numbers in 2017-18 and 2016-17 were 5,000 and 2,500 acres respectively as per Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) reports.
The attack could be attributed to ventilation of anger of these anti-social activists, who are more self centric that greater welfare of the state and its tribal society.
