22 enthusiastic students joined Agartala Bird Walk: Dr Sinha

ITANAGAR, June 16: A Bird Walk conducted at MBB College campus in Agartala on June 10 last was supported by Early and Rainmatter Foundation with Wild Tripura Foundation as local partner. It was a part of five bird walks held simultaneously across the country, including Dehradun, Mysore, Panjim and Tirupati to mark the World Environment Day.

“It aimed at engaging children between the ages of 9 and 13 in a nature walk, fostering their understanding and appreciation of birds and their habitats. It also included various games and interactive activities to provide them a holistic understanding of birds,” said local coordination Dr. Dipak Sinha, assistant Prof (Animal Husbandry & Dairy Technology department) of College of Agriculture (CoA).

“It’s probably the first time that such an initiative was held at Agartala to encourage children to appreciate birds, their habitats and nature as a whole,” he told this daily, adding 22 enthusiastic children from various schools across of Agartala attended it.

Led by experienced guides, the participants embarked on an hour-long bird walk, exploring various habitats within the venue. The walk proved to be an exciting and eye-opening experience, as participants had the opportunity to observe a diverse array of bird species in their natural environment.

Responding to a question if Bird Count of India (BCI) conducted any event in the state, he said that BCI has been in touch with Tripura birders since 2021. One event which connects all birders of the country is Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) and Campus Bird Count (CBC). Since 2021, Tripura birders have been actively participating in both programmes. Moreover, one Bird Monitoring Workshop was conducted at CoA in May 2022, he added.
