Beti ho to Saraswati jesha!

BALASORE, Sept 20: Unemployment is a global phenomenon which stood at 208 million or a 5.8% unemployment rate. India’s unemployment rate, as per National Sample Survey for individuals aged 15 years and above in urban areas, deceased to 6.8% during January-March 2023 from 8.2% a year ago.

Interestingly, Orissa’s unemployment rate fluctuated substantially in recent months; it tended to increase through April 2022-March 2023 period ending at 2.63% in March 2023.

Regrettably, many educated unemployed youth of both sexes, even belonging to SC and ST categories, get frustrated for not getting any white-colour jobs and indulge in unwanted activities to become liability for the society, instead of looking for self-employment opportunities being offered by the Govt.

But a chance meeting with Saraswati Marandi while serving in a petrol pump in Balasore justified the common adage: “Where there is a will there is a way. If you are determined to do something, you can easily do it”.

Saraswati, who graduated in arts in 2019, always with a smiling face, serves in the petrol pump from 8 am to 6 pm and then takes up tuition of children till 7.30 pm to earn her livelihood. Though she is not happy for not getting a white-colour job, but has decided not to be burden on her parents rather help them.

Saraswati is lucky to be the daughter of Arujn Marandi, who earned the hardest way by pulling a thela, but took a bold decision to educate his three children – two daughters and a son. As his wife managed the household affairs in Ranipatna, he ensured trio’s education.

Though Saraswati’s younger brother is working after class-X, but her youngest sister is now pursuing bachelor in physical education (BPEd) from a Bubaneswar-based institute with financial support of the family led by Saraswati.

The family belongs to lower-middle class that refers to households and individuals who are somewhat educated and usually stably employed, but who have not attained the education, occupational prestige or income of the upper-middle class. But, Arjuna has set a model for family for other to emulate.
