ITANAGAR, June 21: Forty-five days’ target has been given to those who are concerned to hand over MLA Apartment located at Chimpu for the newly elected lawmakers to take possession for which urban devilment commissioner Vivek Pandey had a meeting with Assembly secretary in-charge and joint secretary on Friday to expedite the process, Speaker Tesam Pongte said.

In an exclusive interview to this daily in his chamber here, Pongte said that the multi-storied MLA Apartment with four blocks (A, B C and D), each consists of 12 apartments beside bungalows of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, he disclosed.

It is urgently needed as desired by Chief Minister Pema Khandu in tune with a pragmatic plan of the Govt to demolish the existing nearby MLA Cottage having provision to accommodate 10 members as well as ministers’ bungalows for construction of magnificent structures in same places, he informed.

The MLA Cottage was almost ready to be handed over to the Assembly when I was Deputy Speaker (2029-24), but the wave of unfortunate COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21 had forced the state Govt to hand it over to the health & family welfare department (H&FWD) on humanitarian ground for use as COVID-19 hospital to admit patients for their treatment.

But with the Coronavirus disease almost tackled now, the general administration department recently de-notified to transfer it from the H&FWD to the Assembly.  But, huge jungle had grown up and vast solid waste accumulated during its use as hospital, said Pongte, who had inspected it on June 19 last.

Thus, the jungle is being cleared, the solid waste would be removed and the renovation process, particularly minor repair and white washing, would begin soon, he said, adding 20 MLAs have already applied for apartments. The sooner the Apartment is ready, the MLAs and even ministers would occupy.

However, only those MLAs who would live in the apartment would be allocated but not only for their staff, he said, adding that there is no bar for family and staff to stay along with the members.

Deputy Speaker   Kardo Nyigyor  had also inspected the Apartment on June 20.
