Modi-Xi summit ends, commits peace along Indo-China border 

WUHAN (China)| Apr 28| Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping have decided to issue strategic guidance to their respective militaries to strengthen communications and to build trust and understanding without going into minute details, said foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale on Saturday.

Briefing reporters at the end of an unprecedented two-day informal summit between the two leaders here, he said that the duo underscored the importance to maintain peace and tranquillity in all areas of the India-China border region.

“The two leaders underscored that it is important to maintain peace along the Indo-China border region and decided that information sharing arrangements will be improved to prevent and manage situations along the border areas, but they agreed that it was important that both countries showed “maturity” in resolving issues,” he said.

“PM Modi and President Xi also recognised the common threat posed by terrorism and both reiterated their strong condemnation of a resolute opposition to terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. Identifying terrorism as a major global problem, both leaders committed to take steps at bilateral and multilateral levels to eradicate the menace.”

At Hubei, PM Modi pushed for better Indo-China ties, saying that both countries had the responsibility to work for 40% of the world’s population.

He issued an invitation to the Chinese delegation to come to India for a similar summit in 2019.

However, no formal agreement was signed between the two countries, which have identified 20 different mechanisms, including trade and cultural exchange, Gokhale said indicated that such an informal meeting between both could happen again in the future, adding that there was a “level of comfort” between them which could smoothen the path to improving ties.

PM Modi left for New Delhi today after successful completion of two-day informal summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping here which focused on developing a mutually beneficial long-term strategic relationship between both countries besides terrorism and climate change.

Chinese President Xi is fond of Indian films and has seen a number of Indian films, including Bollywood and regional, Gokhale said. The duo took a walk together dayalong East Lake and an hour-long boat ride here today. (ANI)

“A milestone in India-China ties”

However, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Kong Xuanyou said the just-concluded informal summit between the leaders of China and India was a milestone in bilateral relations.

China and India have concrete differences but the summit was not aimed at addressing these specific issues, Kong told reporters in the central Chinese city of Wuhan where the meeting took place.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said the problems between China and India are of a limited, temporary nature, Kong said, reports The Quint.
