ITANAGAR, Feb 07: BJP nominee Tsering Lhamu is all set to win the February 27 by-elections to Lumla seat in Tawang district unopposed, after no other candidates filed nomination on the last date on Tuesday, an election official said here.

Lhamu, wife of former MLA Jambey Tashi, filed her nomination papers on February 2 and 6 last.

Though Peoples’ Party of Arunachal (PPA), the lone regional political party of the state, had nominated former gaon burha Leki Norbu as its candidate, he decided to withdraw from the race at the last moment.

“The result will be officially announced by the District Electoral Officer (DEO) of Tawang on February 10, the last date of withdrawal of papers,” Deputy Chief Electoral Officer Liken Koyu informed.

By-election to the seat was necessitated after Tashi, a sitting MLA, died in November last year at a city hospital in Guwahati at the age of 48.

Scrutiny of papers would be held on February 8 and counting of votes would take place on March 02.

Tashi represented the constituency for three consecutive terms since 2009.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed his gratitude to the people of Lumla constituency for their support to Lhamu.

Taking to Twitter Khandu said, “Her unopposed election is a testimony of faith in the politics of development & good governance of @BJP4India led by Shri @narendramodi ji & Shri @JPNadda ji.”

The people of Lumla have displayed a rare kind of love and affection for late brother Jambey Tashi, Khandu said in another tweet.

“I am sure Lhamu ji will not only carry forward the vision of Late Jambey ji but will also complete his unfinished projects dedicated to Lumla constituency,” the chief minister said.

Assembly elections in the northeastern state are due next year simultaneously with the general elections.
