OWA drawing interns from far and wide

NAHARLAGUN | May 13 | It was a chance meeting with young man Jaitunbo from Myanmar the other day, who said he was working with Oju Welfare Association (OWA) here.

Responding to further queries, he disclosed that he was presently pursuing Master in Social Welfare (MSW) in Shillong-based Martin Luther Christian University and was working with OWA with tow calls mates Gepo Mutem of Arunachal and Joshan Terangpi of Karbi Anglong district of Assam.

The last duo joined him soon, and on being asked what prompted them to come all the way to Naharlagun, the trio responded in similar language: This 45-day internship is part of our academic pursuit having specific marks for final examination. We have to work in an NGO for this purpose but when learnt about the multifarious social welfare activities we zeroed down to OWA.

A group of rescued women were seen attending a coaching class by an intern Ibin Rigiya, a psychology of Christ University, Bangalore, in OWA campus.

When asked, chairperson Anya Ratan said that interns continue to come throughout the year, particularly from Rajiv Gandhi University. This justifies the common saying “a person institution is known by its works.” And the OWA engaged in rehabilitating the exploited, victimized, downtrodden sections of the society for last few decades, has naturally drawn national attention.
